Problem: A Plymouth, PA family with an older colonial-style home struggled with hot and cold spots in various rooms during the summer and winter.
Solution: Installed a multi-zone mini-split system. It provides heating and cooling solutions for their entire home, and they can customize the temperature in almost every room.
Having an antique, colonial home can be a homeowner’s great joy. Immersing yourself in the history and solid construction of these old gems is truly special. But, the reality is that these homes were not built to handle today’s heating and cooling needs.
After living in our homeowner’s colonial for a few seasons, it was apparent that their special home couldn’t provide them with the heating and cooling that they needed.
Their home looked great but wasn’t all that comfortable.
The house was plagued with uneven heat and cooling. The old, thick plaster walls blocked airflow, leaving the downstairs room tolerable but the upstairs bedrooms feeling like a fridge in the winter and an oven in the summer.
They got by for a while with window fans, window air conditioning units, and space heaters. They worked just okay but also used a lot of electricity. Not a satisfactory solution!
As our homeowners did their research, they eliminated the idea of upgrading their furnace and installing additional ductwork. It would be too costly and sometimes impossible to run additional ductwork to the spots that needed them most.
Instead, they decided on a Carrier multi-zone ductless mini split heating and cooling system to cool and heat the entire house.
They’d maximize their comfort with much better control over the temperatures in each room. And, it wouldn’t hike up the electric bill like those portable ACs and heaters. Plus, the installation would be quick and relatively easy, requiring very little construction.
We’ll see how it all worked out in this case study! In particular, we’ll cover:

How Ductless Works
As the name implies, ductless mini splits don’t require ductwork to heat or cool your home. That meant our Plymouth family could bypass the ducts in their older home and not worry about ripping apart rooms to add more runs.
These systems are “split” between indoor and outdoor components that work together to provide you with heat and cool whenever you need it.
Outside you have the heat pump, which is responsible for moving heat into your home in the winter and out of it in the summer. It’s similar to the standard AC condenser units that you see outside houses. Except that it has the added capability to work in “reverse,” bringing warmth into the house in winter.
Inside the house, air handlers that suck in air from the room, warm or cool it – whatever is called for – and then recirculate it. You’ll install one in each part of the house you want to treat.
The indoor and outdoor components work together using flexible piping with refrigerant liquid running in a closed loop between the two units. Heat warms or cools the liquid, and that heat travels between the components through the hidden piping.
The result? Customized temperature control for each room. And, no need for a furnace to heat the air, or an air conditioner to cool it.
Avoiding Ductwork and Vents With a Mini Split
The advantage of a mini split is that it can treat the entire home without the need for expensive ductwork installation.
Instead, the ductless mini split installers simply run flexible piping through the walls – a far less invasive option than running ductwork. All anyone sees is the air handlers mounted on a few walls around the house.
It’s a far more attractive and efficient option than a wall-mounted or window air conditioner. And, it sends just the right amount of heat or cooling to every room.
